Daily Mail

I saw in the Daily Mail a few weeks ago, at first I thought I was just another over done semi-surreal image with the red sky over the iconic London landmark, but I was wrong.

Overall this image is good with the heat it pumps out of it with the blood red sky and the dark bold bridge as the main image and the reflection of it all in the foreground.

After reading the write up, it was shot my a amateur with a camera which was brought for under £200, I know people say "right place, right time" and I feel this image sums that saying up because I don't feel it was under to knowledge and photography skill, I just feel its down to luck.

"Research, planning & visualisation = 30%
Committment & effort to carry out above = 30%
Camera technique, photography skill = 10%
Artistic flair, creativity = 10%
Luck = 20%"

This is photographers % on how he gets images.

Rankin essay

This is my 2,000 word essay I have done on the iconic photographer called Rankin, it goes through his amazing career and life behind the lens.I did it on Rankin because of a number of reason.

1- I have done alot of work and research of Rankin and his photography his year because of doing the a D&AD brief for him and the hunger magazine early this year.

2- Rankin was doing a open interview at the V&A in London, which I went to see, if helped me to do this essay, also it was good to see the man himself and to see who I was doing all the work on, in a way it put it all into context.

3- I feel Rankin has been the biggest source of inspiration in my work and development in this course, also he has made me see photography in a different light and to understanding it alot more.

I have now started to look at my presentation of my writer work alot more and I have designed this essay in this style and in these colours because it suits and is in the style of Rankin as a personal, as when I saw him he was in all black.

Project Proposal

This is the 1000 Project Proposal I have needed to do as apart of the Exploring Specialist pathway 2 module. As far as the wordcount goes I find this hard to get in all which I needed to say, also I couldn't believed how far I needed to go off the main subject in this proposal. I can see why I need to do this so I can show that I have looked at every possible option in my research.

This proposal was all about post production in photography ( Photoshop) I feel I need to make use of these skills and to better them if I want to make it in the industry.

Photographers in the industry are now using photoshop as a way of saving money, "big things that come to mind are replacing the background of a photo that I took in studio with a black background to something more pleasing to the eye (I'd rather not buy & haul around dozens of nice muslin backgrounds when I can replace them in photoshop)."

Its interesting to see that photographers in and out of industry are not just using it, to just make a image better or making into a piece of art, its being use to cut costs and to help the photographer stay afloat in bad waters, like it is now with the banks not borrowing like they were.

"Post production is an important tool in modern photography. However, in general I try to keep things as real as possible, and I capture as much as I can within the frame. I shot a whole project on Polaroid which could not be manipulated, and Rankin Live also had very little post-production"

The art class fashion shoot.

I was asked to take some images for the art student as they have made these paper dressers for a exhibition they were doing. By the sound of the brief they give me I am not should what sort of shots they wanted, but they wanted something different.

In a way this makes my job a little harder but gives me freedom on what I want to do. and to use of own creative skills to produce something different. I did some close up work and some shots using different angles, just to see what I could get. As you can see by the images they keep out well and they were a little different to the normal types of images I do, when in the studio.

I was worry about the exposure of the dresses because of the dresses being white and having a white background. I feel It went ok because of my experience I have running and working in a studio.

This was a bit of a test for me as I have worked and ran photography studio before, but never have I been in one with as many people in there as there were that day. There was about 20 people in there at the same time, But this is good experience for me because if I ever do another fashion shoot of this scale again, which I probably will do as I am looking to work in a studio when I finish this course.

After reading a PDF on the fashion photography career it states "A fashion shoot can easily involve upwards of 10 people all working hard to make sure the images are perfect, all of whom the photographer must keep tabs on to make sure the different elements are working together. On large commercial shoots, the photographer may also have to work with clients on set."

Staffs live work, job 2

This was the second live job I had through from Staffs uni with-in 2 weeks, I was happy that I was getting paid work again, but I was concerned about if it was going to get in the way of my uni work. Yet again I feel it's down to time management, but this will help me to get ready for the industry again, because of the workload of being a professional photographer in the industry.

Its not all Monday to Friday 9-5, as I will have to do wedding and other freelance work at weekends, from my experience when I was in the industry I no of the workload and it's very heavy because I was in a city location. I was about working 16 hours a day with traveling, shooting and editing so I no its not going to be easy.

This brief was all about, the Uni wanted me to produce a range of images to market and advertises there new sport kit, here are some image from the shoot I did. The one at the top shows what Derby Uni have done with there marketing for there sports kit, The client wanted was after the same as this but I feel it is a bit to Americanised for a british uni.

They were a few problems with this job,

One was that they had a other photographer as the job and that meant I was shadowing him, so I didn't have control of the shoot. Another problem was that the light was poor and we didn't have any studio lighting with us, in-turn this meant, I needed to relay on post production skills I have.

The Uni were happy with the results of this shoot, I would say that these's are not the best images  I have done but I am happy with the quality of them seems the lighting was poor and the problem we had.

I feel this will all be worth it in the long run, but like what this quote says, I will have them days when I feel is it all worth it.

"The road to becoming an established professional photographer is not an easy one. The most important thing is willpower. There will almost certainly be times when you wonder if it is all worth it. Try not to become downhearted and disillusioned. Make as many contacts as you possible can. It takes time. Go out there and do it."

Staffs Uni live work.

This is a live job I did for Staffs uni, I have not had a lot of work thorough the Uni, and I think this maybe the first one.

The email attach to this, shows what the client wanted, I important part of the brief was that "we want an image that gives a hint of what is in the new student space, but leaves students wanting to look more as they can’t see anything.".

I feel the images I did gives what the client wanted. I have used the use of soft focusing in my images to show depth in the images, but not much detail, like what they asked for.

I feel that the first image was the best, as it looks a lot more cleaner and more professionally done because of the composition and soft focusing. But the client used the second image for there marketing of the new room. I feel its good but its not as good as the first, if you look at them side by side. I did the images like this with the staffs logo on the right and in focus because I wanted to show people where it was and what it was about, also to show the connected with staffs.

Feelings of the 2nd year.

Well I have got through the first year and now I feel I am on the home run to finishing my degree. I now know how hard this next year is going to be, because basically I need to do twice as much work with-in the same time frame as last year. I feel this can be done as long as put 110% into my work and time management.

Time management is going to be key if I am going to be successful in this 2nd and final year of this degree.
This quote talks about a rule called the 80:20 rule, which is a ratio which is used to help with time management. I know understand where all the times goes when I am working and that how true this quote is, I need to be careful about not spending to much time on one thing because in-turn this will slow me down and that's not managing your time correctly.

"This is neatly summed up in the Pareto Principle, or the '80:20 Rule'. This argues that typically 80% of unfocussed effort generates only 20% of results. The remaining 80% of results are achieved with only 20% of the effort. While the ratio is not always 80:20, this broad pattern of a small proportion of activity generating non-scalar returns recurs so frequently as to be the norm in many areas."
